Milk-”Dose the body good, well maybe not”
We are talking a multi-million dollar ad campaign and a multi-billion dollar industry being affected. I imaging the agriculture industry will be hiring a few lobbyist to change this.
Retired Pro Football Players and Depression
The University of Michigan completed a survey of retired pro football players and rates of depression. What this report suggests is that the rate of depression is similar to that of the general population.
An excerpt from the article: “Dr. Schwenk told Medscape that the popular image of a football player having an illustrious career, making lots of money, and retiring to become a television commentator and play in pro-am golf tournaments is not really representative of all players. “There’s a population of retired players with significant depressive symptoms, similar to
the general population,” he said, adding that what is unique is that more than half of the survey respondents reported high levels of pain. “If you take all respondents with high depression and high pain scores, it’s not huge, butthey are very disabled and have a very poor quality of life,” he noted.”
I have had the opportunity to meet and chat (shortly) with the greatest quarterback of all time, John Unitas. For all the glory and acclimations he has received, the guy looked miserable. He walked with a limp, his one hand had severe nerve damage, to a point were he could barely hold a pen.

Tainted Chicken Feed
I don’t know how this slipped under my RADAR. Apparently the same contaminated wheat gluten that contaminated pet food a couple weeks ago has been fed to chicken.
The FDA reports that 30 poultry farms received contaminated feed in February. The report states, “Because there is no evidence of harm to humans associated with consumption of chicken fed the contaminated product, no recall of poultry products processed from these animals is being issued. Testing and the joint investigation continue. If any evidence surfaces to indicate there is harm to humans, the appropriate action will be taken.”
FDA News Release.
Didn’t these guys see the “Lion King”. The whole “Circle of Life” thing?
National Nurses Week 2007
Thanks for all the hard work and sacrifice.
The ANA is publishing many facts…some are them as follows:
- The nation’s nurses rank first for their honesty and integrity, with 82
percent of Americans rating them “high” or “very high,” according to a
2005 Gallup Poll. Nurses have consistently rated first every year but
one after being added to the list in 1999.
- The link between adequate and appropriate nurse staffing and positive
patient outcomes has been shown in several ANA publications and studies,
including ANA’s Nurse Staffing and Patient Outcomes in Inpatient
Hospital Settings. This report, published in May 2000, found that
shorter lengths of stay are strongly related to higher RN staffing
per acuity-adjusted day and that patient morbidity indicators for
preventable conditions are inversely related to RN skill mix.
For more facts go to the American Nurses Association web site.
